Beeman and Shannon Named Speakers for 2019 Heumphreus Memorial Lecture at UC Davis

The 33rd Annual Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture will take place February 16, 2019 at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The event is a tribute to the vet school's longtime resident farrier, the late Charles Heumphreus.

This year’s event features lectures by farrier Tim Shannon of California and equine veterinarian G. Marvin Beeman of Colorado. Shannon will also participate in an afternoon "hands on" dissection and anatomy appreciation session with the current UC Davis resident farrier, Shane Westman, and UC Davis Professor of Clinical Surgical & Radiological Sciences Mary Beth Whitcomb.

Dr. Beeman will present his iconic lecture, "The Relationship of Form to Function", followed by Tim Shannon on "Anatomy Decoded: Form to Function from the Farrier’s Perspective".

Farriers and equine veterinarians are invited to attend the event, which takes place from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Morning lectures will be in Gladys Valley Hall on the vet school campus, and the afternoon demonstration will be in the Large Animal Clinic’s covered arena. Registration and a complete schedule for the event can be found on the UC Davis website.

The Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture is an annual event that has been offered free to farriers and equine veterinarians since 1987. Colloquially known as “The Heumphreus,” the event is the first endowed lecture at the SVM and has attracted an impressive list of farrier and veterinary speakers over the past 33 years. The endowment was founded by Dr. Tim O’Brien, UC Davis emeritus faculty radiologist, to honor Heumphreus’ 18 years of service as the UC Davis veterinary hospital farrier.

This year’s program is a joint effort of the Center for Continuing Professional Education and the Heumphreus Organizing Committee, composed of UC Davis resident farrier, Shane Westman, APF, and clinicians, Drs. Emily Berryhill, Larry Galuppo and Mary Beth Whitcomb (chair).

The afternoon session has a limited capacity (50), so early registration is strongly encouraged.

Tim Shannon, CJF, APF, AWCF, is a full time farrier from Southern California, and has been in practice since 1987. His practice consists mostly of FEI Eventing and Endurance horses. His clients have competed across the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Shannon is committed to continual farrier education for all. Shannon is currently enrolled in study for the Graduate Diploma in Equine Locomotor Research through the Royal Veterinary College of London.

Dr. G. Marvin Beeman, DVM, received his veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1957 and spent his entire career at Littleton Equine Medical Center with a focus on equine lameness. Dr. Beeman has served in countless roles at the state and national level, including president of both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, as well as various leadership roles with the American Horse Council, American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), USDA Equine Advisory Committee, Morris Animal Foundation and Colorado State University. Dr. Beeman is an avid horseman, polo player and longtime huntsman for the Arapahoe Hunt Club.

Thanks to the generous support of individuals and organizations over the years, admission to the Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture remains free of charge. However, to help sustain the level of excellence for which "The Heumphreus" has been known for more than 30 years, the school asks that participants consider making a contribution of $50 or more. Donations will help continue to bring exceptional speakers to benefit farriers and veterinarians alike.
