UC Davis Heumphreus equine foot lecture will be a free online event with focus on farriery, surfaces, foot imaging

Each year, Hoofcare Publishing salutes the University of California at Davis, as the vet school hosts its annual Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture, which focuses on the equine foot. The vet school brings leading speakers from around the world to the northern California campus, and opens the door with free admission.

This year, the event will be "virtual" and hosted on the Internet on Saturday, February 6 at 1 pm, PST. Farriers and veterinarians from around the world who have always wanted to attend will finally have their chance--without leaving the comfort of their own homes or offices. The event could be
attended from trucks and barn aisles or anywhere else there is a good Internet signal.

The event is a tribute to the vet school's longtime resident farrier, the late Charles Heumphreus.

We are pleased to share the information, but insist that anyone interested in attending fill out the online registration immediately, since the event will be held on Saturday, February 5th.

Free registration closes Friday, February 5, 2021 at 1:00 pm (PST).

Participating in this year's Humphreus event will be (left to right) Assistant Professors Mathieu Spriet and Sarah le Jeune, Florida farrier Curtis Burns, UC Davis Professor Susan Stover, and UC Davis resident farrier Shane Westman.

About his lecture, Curtis Burns commented, "I'll be speaking on one of my favorite topics - critical thinking. The mental deduction process we use to determine whether or not a horse requires shoes, and to further decipher what type of shoe best meets the needs of the horse is one well worth discussing.

"It's my hope to be able to share some of what I've been fortunate enough to learn through a variety of experiences and observation of patterns. A big thank you to UC Davis and
Shane Westman for the invitation!" Burns will also participate in the roundtable, as will UC Davis resident farrier Shane Westman.

The Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture is an annual event that has been offered free to farriers and equine veterinarians since 1987. Colloquially known as “The Heumphreus,” the event is the first endowed lecture at the SVM and has attracted an impressive list of farrier and veterinary speakers over the past 34 years.

The endowment was founded by Dr. Tim O’Brien, UC Davis emeritus faculty radiologist, to honor Heumphreus’ 18 years of service as the UC Davis veterinary hospital farrier.

Thanks to the generous support of individuals and organizations over the years, admission to the Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lecture remains free of charge.
